Learning Objective #1: Examine how attitudes toward linguistic standards empower and oppress language users.

My paraphrase: Discuss how language standards bring positive and negative effects  in society

Evidence of learning:  In my LLN paper, I wrote about preparing and practicing English words and phrases to communicate at the airport, and about my father feeling nervous with language barriers. I realized that not knowing a language blocks communication, and that my mother tongue and English together shape my unique culture and identity

My score 0-5: 5

Learning Objective #2: Explore and analyze, in writing and reading, a variety of genres and rhetorical situations.

My paraphrase:  Explore different types of texts to understand the author’s writing intentions and genre settings behind the works

Evidence of learning:

1 Paying attention to an author’s publication date and the platform where the work appears helps us understand the intended audience and the broader writing context. It also reveals how an author may adjust their writing style when addressing different groups of readers

2For example, in my synthesis essay about choosing a major, I wrote from the perspective of a student to other students and parents; therefore, my writing style was to share advice and present my views in a sharing manner

Learning Objective #3: Develop strategies for reading, drafting, collaborating, revising, and editing.

My paraphrase: Choose a topic for the essay, make a preliminary outline, revise it based on others’ feedback, and gradually add more details and supporting arguments

Evidence of learning: In my Synthesis Essay, I first chose my topic, then researched it and determined my main argument. I also learned the requirements for the essay, such as how to cite sources and find relevant materials. After collecting the materials, I added them to my paragraphs for analysis and argument, and wrote a draft. I shared the draft with my professor and classmates for feedback, then used their suggestions to add details and make improvements, and finally completed the essay

My score 0-5: 4

Learning Objective #4: Recognize and practice key rhetorical terms and strategies when engaged in writing situations.

My paraphrase: Use rhetorical techniques in writing to achieve the purpose of the essay

Evidence of learning: In the Phase 1, in Amy Tan’s article ‘Mother Tongue’, she used Logos and Pathos as writing techniques. The purpose of Mother Tongue is to show the language bias and discrimination against non-native English speakers in society. She gave examples, like her mother being ignored in the hospital because of her limited English. She also reflected on her own stereotypes about her mother’s English, and showed readers how society sets strict standards for “proper” English. This makes readers think and connects with them emotionally

Learning Objective #5: Understand and use print and digital technologies to address a range of audiences.

My paraphrase: Through interactive activities, we can identify the weaknesses in our essays and find new inspiration

Evidence of learning: In both Phase 1 and Phase 2, there is an interactive part. We can use visual and auditory methods to better understand the topic. At the same time, during peer review of our essays, we can get suggestions and guidance from others, find the weaknesses in our essays, and make revisions

Learning Objective #6: Locate research sources (including academic journal articles, magazine and newspaper articles) in the library’s databases or archives and on the Internet and evaluate those sources for credibility, accuracy, timeliness, and bias.

My paraphrase: Besides traditional writing, students can also use various forms to present their ideas and content

Evidence of learning: In Translation 2, I used the software Canva to design my poster. In Translation 1, some classmates also used videos or personal presentations to show their work

My score 0-5: 5

Learning Objective #7: Compose texts that integrate a stance with appropriate sources, using strategies such as summary, analysis, synthesis, and argument.

My paraphrase: Use the school’s websites and other academic websites flexibly to find the sources you need

Evidence of learning: In the library session, I learned that we can search for related materials and books on the CCNY Library website. This platform includes books and data from all colleges of the City University of New York. At the same time, we can use our CCNY student email accounts to register for free access to The New York Times for five years

My score 0-5: 4

Learning Objective #8: Practice citing sources accurately and consistently.

My paraphrase: Discuss whether the essay meets academic requirements and adjust its format according to the genre and the professor’s guidelines

Evidence of learning: In my Synthesis Essay, the sources I cited did not meet MLA format requirements. I only copied the links and changed the link titles, but I did not include the authors, publication dates, or websites of the sources. I also did not provide a complete list of references
